Gunmen have shot dead 17 students at an elementary school in Texas. One teacher and three others were killed in the incident. Initially, 15 people were reported killed but later it rose to 21.

The BBC quoted Texas Governor Greg Abbott as saying in a report on Wednesday (May 25th).

The incident took place at Texas Rob Elementary School around 11:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott said. The school is located about 63 miles (133 km) west of San Antonio, the seventh-largest city in the United States. This is an elementary school. Its students are five to 11 years old.

Abbott added that the gunman was identified as Salvador Ramos. He is 18 years old. He is a resident of that area. He used a handgun and possibly a rifle during the shooting. Although it is not yet certain.

Governor Greg Abbott and his wife Cecilia mourned. He called on Texas residents to unite to prevent a recurrence.

Meanwhile, the gunman Ramos died on the spot. He is thought to have died in a gunfight with police sent to the scene. Also, two police officers were injured during the exchange of fire. Although they are safe.

Local police said several more people were injured in the gunfire. Among them are a 6-year-old woman and a 10-year-old child who is being treated at Antonio University Hospital. Their condition is critical.
