The senior bankers claimed they did not intentionally lay anyone off
Bangladesh Bank has instructed the private banks to stop laying off its employees, regardless of pretexts.
A delegation of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB), an organization of bank executives, met with the central bank governor Fazle Kabir on Monday, during which the instruction was conveyed.
The meeting was attended by the deputy governor and other top officials.
Ali Reza Iftekhar, chairman of the ABB and managing director of Eastern Bank Ltd, led the ABB delegation.
Central Bank spokesman Md Serajul Islam said that the senior bankers claimed they did not intentionally lay anyone off.In reply to this, the Bangladesh Bank said that if they found allegations of any employee laid off on the pretext of the Covid-19 pandemic, then strict actions would be taken against the bank.
Some bankers were reportedly forced to resign voluntarily due to various pressures, even amid the pandemic. Other reasons have also been reportedly shown during layoffs.
The central bank evidently received such information during a special inspection of six private banks from January 1, 2020 until August 9 this year.
Some of them have been forced to resign, while others were removed and/or fired, raising concern from the central bank.
